Problem Statement

Camp For All, a nonprofit organization, faced challenges with low volunteer turnout, particularly among young adults. The organization needed a strategy to attract and retain volunteers who could support their mission of providing transformative experiences for children and adults with special needs.


Research & Analysis

Objective: Understand what motivates young adults to volunteer and identify barriers preventing them from doing so.

Methodology:

  • Surveys: Conducted in-person surveys at South Congress and the University of Texas’ 6th Street campus.
  • Sample Size: 64 participants, with 59 usable responses.
  • Demographics: The respondents were primarily young, unmarried, educated individuals with at least a high school diploma and a middle-class household income.

Key Findings:

  • Networking: Young adults are motivated by opportunities to build professional networks. Many are unaware that volunteering can facilitate valuable networking experiences.
  • Personal Fulfillment: Volunteering provides a deep sense of purpose and personal growth, making it an attractive activity for those seeking meaning in their lives.
  • Leadership Opportunities: Young adults are drawn to roles where they can lead and positively influence others.
  • Civic Engagement: There is a strong interest in contributing to community welfare through civic engagement.

Hypotheses

Based on the research, the following hypotheses were formed:

  • H1: Networking opportunities positively influence interest in volunteering.
  • H2: Personal fulfillment through meaningful contributions increases volunteer interest.
  • H3: Leadership opportunities within volunteer roles attract more young volunteers.
  • H4: Civic engagement is a key motivator for volunteering.

Proposed Solution

Strategy: Leverage influencer marketing to create a volunteer event that appeals to young adults’ desire for networking, personal fulfillment, leadership, and civic engagement.

Recommendations:

  1. Influencer Engagement: Invite local influencers to participate in volunteer activities at Camp For All. These influencers can share their experiences on social media, showcasing the benefits of volunteering and encouraging their followers to join.
  2. Public Volunteer Event: Organize a large-scale volunteering event open to the public, with influencers present. This event would allow fans to interact with influencers while contributing to a meaningful cause, thereby enhancing personal fulfillment and civic engagement.
  3. Recurring Volunteer Programs: Develop programs that offer ongoing leadership opportunities, allowing volunteers to take on more responsibility over time and deepen their commitment to Camp For All.

Outcome

Expected Impact:

  • Increased Volunteer Turnout: By aligning volunteer opportunities with the interests and values of young adults, Camp For All can expect a significant increase in volunteer participation.
  • Sustained Engagement: The combination of networking, personal fulfillment, and leadership opportunities is likely to foster long-term engagement among volunteers.

  • Volunteer Sign-Ups: Track the number of new volunteers who sign up after influencer events.

Reflection

This project highlighted the importance of understanding the target audience’s motivations and designing a strategy that aligns with their needs. The success of the proposed solution would hinge on effectively communicating the value of volunteering through trusted voices in the community and creating meaningful, repeatable experiences for participants.
